Assistant Coaches Hired on to Team Canada’s Coaching Staff

Rachel Malone and Mathew Mcveigh have been hired as National Team Assistant Coaches to support Canada’s journey to gold in the upcoming 2018 IQA World Cup.

Malone founded the University of Calgary Quidditch Team in 2012, and the Calgary Mavericks (formerly known as the Calgary Mudbloods) in 2015. She also works as a Gameplay Coordinator and referee certifier for Quidditch Canada, and was the first certified Head Referee in Western Canada. Malone plays primarily as a chaser, and has five years of quidditch coaching experience, which include her role as assistant coach and speaking captain for Team Canada in Frankfurt for the 2016 World Cup.

Mcveigh first began playing quidditch with the University of Ottawa in 2012, and was a member of the team during its 2015-16 season, where it placed first at both Eastern Regionals  and Nationals. During this past 2016-17 season, he played for the University of Guelph Gryphons, placing second at both Eastern Regionals in November 2016, and at Nationals this past April, 2017. Notably, Mcveigh has played as a beater for Team Canada both in 2014 and in 2016. Aside from quidditch, Mcveigh also brings varsity wrestling and competitive hockey experience to Team Canada’s decorated leadership team.
